Deepika Padukone and her team conducted a social experiment to find out how easy it is to buy acid in India. The team managed to buy 24 bottles of acid.
Deepika Padukone is on a mission to raise awareness against the sale of acid. After playing the role of an acid attack survivor in Meghna Gulzar’s Chhapaak, Deepika took part in a social experiment with her team to find out how easy it is to buy acid in the country. Her team was able to collect 24 bottles of acid from multiple shops in Mumbai.
Members of Deepika’s team dressed and acted as regular professionals, like a plumber, a businessman, a student, a drunkard, even a housewife and a street goon, to conduct the experiment. The actress, on the other hand, watched them buy the acid bottles from her car.
The video starts with Deepika Padukone saying, “If someone proposes to you and you say no, raise your voice when someone harasses you, or if you fight for your rights…and someone throws acid on your face.”
In the video, she points out the biggest reason why acid is thrown on innocent women. She says, “Acid bikne ki sabse badi vajah acid khud hai. Agar ye bikta nahi toh phikta nahi (It wouldn’t get thrown if it wouldn’t sell).”
The actors can be seen asking the shopkeepers to give the strongest acid ‘which can burn somebody’s skin’. Most of the shopkeepers didn’t even enquire much about the buyers and didn’t ask for ID proofs. However, there were some who told the buyers that the acid can’t be sold without ID proof.
At the end of the video, Deepika Padukone reveals that her team collected 24 bottles from different part of Mumbai. She says, “I cannot believe that we were able to buy 24 bottles of acid in just one day even after the Supreme Court ruling which sets strict rules for the sale of acid.”
She adds, “I think along with the shopkeepers it’s also our responsibility to inform the police if we see anyone illegally buying or selling acid.”
